Nothing on either booking platform explains this, and it is the single most misread number here.

The per-head column is arithmetic, not a published fare. Each of these listings states "per group (up to 4)" beside its own price, and the operator sets the total whatever your party size.
What does $81 actually buy?
A coach seat to Dynjandi and back, a ninety-minute stop written into the fare, and a guide talking both ways. Not hotel pickup, which that listing excludes explicitly, and not food, because there is nothing to buy at the waterfall. It is the lowest fare here and it carries the largest review base by a wide margin, which is not a coincidence.
What does the next step up buy?
Between $111 and $180 you move from a coach to either a boat or a coach with something attached. The whale trip at $111 is three hours on Ísafjarðardjúp. At $151 the seal-and-fjord tour turns inland to Hvítanes and Súðavík instead. At $152 and $154 the farm tours add coffee, cake and an actual farm to the waterfall run. At $169 the e-bike tour buys a cap of six rather than fifty. At $178 you land on Vigur.
The pattern is that money buys either a different place or fewer people, and almost never more time.
Is the expensive Vigur listing worth $52 more?
Same island, same boat, same family, two booking platforms. The $178 listing is final sale and refunds nothing once booked. The $230 listing refunds in full at 24 hours, carries a higher rating from three times as many reviewers, and publishes a far fuller inclusion list — a guide ashore, the Puffin Path, the historic buildings, coffee and cake, and the tern sticks in July.
If your date cannot move, take the cheaper one. If you are on a cruise itinerary, $52 for a cancellable booking is cheap insurance, and the boat tours page sets both out.

At four travellers the superjeep is cheaper per head than the coach and gives you the vehicle to yourselves. That is the one genuinely surprising sum here, and it is why the private tours page exists.
What is never in the fare
- A meal. No trip here includes one, and several name lunch as an exclusion.
- Gratuities. Named as excluded on seven listings, which means only that they are not collected. Iceland does not expect tipping.
- Warm clothing. Obvious, and worth saying, because the boats put you on deck at nine degrees.
- Hotel pickup, usually. Two shore excursions collect you at the ship; the cheapest coach excludes pickup outright.
What is in the fare more often than you would guess
- Coffee, tea or cake on three trips, two of them at a working farm.
- Wi-Fi on board on five, which matters if your ship's package stops at the gangway.
- A restroom on both boats.
- Parking and landing fees where they apply, so there is nothing to pay at the far end.
What the free things would cost if they were not free
Dynjandi charges nothing: no entry, no parking. The Bolafjall platform charges nothing. The Hvítanes seals charge nothing. Walking Neðstikaupstaður charges nothing. The two museums do charge — ISK 1,600 for the Westfjords Heritage Museum, and an unpublished figure at Ósvör — and they are the only admissions in this whole region worth budgeting for.
So the ratio is unusual: an $81 coach fare is one hundred per cent transport. Doing it without a tour prices the alternative.
Does booking early save money?
No, and nothing here suggests it does. What early booking buys is availability on the small departures: the e-bike tour caps at six and the smallest coach at eighteen, and those fill on days when several ships are in. The big coaches carry forty-five to fifty-nine and rarely sell out. Most listings let you reserve now and pay later, so holding a spot costs nothing at all.
Where the money goes that you cannot see
Distance. Ísafjörður is roughly 454 km and six hours from Reykjavík by road, and about 40 minutes by air. Fuel, vehicles and drivers all cost more at the end of that supply line than they do in the capital, and the season runs a few months rather than a year. That is why a coach seat to a free waterfall is $81 rather than $30, and it is a fair price rather than a mark-up.
