Isafjordur Map: Where Everything Leaves From

The single commonest complaint in the reviews of these trips is not a trip. It is finding the boat. Four departure points sit inside about a kilometre of each other here, they look interchangeable on a map, and they are not. Nearly every meeting point below is a five-minute walk from the pier, which is where the guided Isafjordur tours start.

The cruise dock, where the coaches wait

Large ships come alongside at the dock on the spit. The terminal has a single exit, and the coaches line up directly outside it after customs — one operator's own directions say exactly that. Every road trip listed here meets here or is collected from the ship itself, and travellers consistently describe the signage as clear. If your ticket says cruise port, you will not have to look for it.

The old harbour, where the boats are

Round the water from the cruise dock, a few minutes on foot, is the working harbour. Two quite different departures use it, and they are not the same pier. This is the part of town people get wrong, and it is worth walking once before your departure time rather than at it.

The Vigur pier, and how to spot it

The island boat leaves from the pier immediately beyond the tender berth. The operator's own directions are unusually good: leave the dockside through the small security hut, follow the wooden fence on your right, take the first right, and it is about a six-minute walk. If you have come ashore by tender you are already next door — a minute at most. Look for the boat with VIGUR written on it in large letters.

The red boathouse on Ásgeirsgata

The whale-watching trips sail from Sjóferðir's red boathouse at Ásgeirsgata, 400 Ísafjörður. The operator's own note says it is by the red boathouse on the harbour and that you cannot miss it. In practice several travellers have written that there are a number of red buildings along there and that this one sits back behind others; one party walked for half an hour and one missed the sailing altogether.

What to do about it. Walk it the day before if you can, or leave the pier twenty minutes ahead rather than five. The operator asks all passengers to check in fifteen to thirty minutes before departure, which builds in the margin if you use it. And book a refundable listing, so a missed boat is a rebooking rather than a loss.

Meeting points as stated by each operator on 5 September 2026. Several listings publish no meeting point in their booking data at all — they are private trips that agree one with you before the day, and their row says Ísafjörður rather than a pier.

Getting out of town

The Vestfjarðagöng tunnel, 5.4 km and completed in 1996, is what makes the first of those legs quick; Dýrafjarðargöng, opened in October 2020, is what makes the last one possible without a mountain pass. Neither removes the weather, and the weather page covers what does close.

Where a map does not help

Two things a map will not tell you. Whether your ship is alongside or at anchor changes every walking distance in this town, and you often will not know until the morning — the Vigur operator quotes six minutes from a dock and one from a tender for the same pier. And a street address in Ísafjörður will get you to the right street and not to the right building, which is the whole story of the red boathouse. Use the landmark the operator gives, not the postcode.
